Good news first: if your Sony WF-1000XM5 used to sound massive and now sound thin, your earbuds are probably fine. Sony ships foam-style tips in the box, and foam is a consumable: it seals brilliantly and then, after months of daily squeezing, it stops. Here's how to tell what's going on and what to do about it.
Why the XM5 fit changes over time
The XM5's stock polyurethane tips behave like all foam: each insertion compresses the material, and thousands of compressions later it loses its slow-rebound bounce. A tired foam tip doesn't expand back against your ear canal, so the seal opens. You notice it as three separate "faults": weaker bass, weaker noise cancelling and an earbud that works itself loose. One cause, three symptoms.
The XM5 is also a relatively big, heavy earbud. Weight amplifies every bit of lost grip: what a light earbud forgives, the XM5 punishes.
Check these before buying anything
- Look at the tips. Compressed, shiny or cracked foam is spent foam. If they no longer spring back slowly after a squeeze, they're done.
- Redo the size test. Sony's Headphones app has an air-tightness test under 'Determine optimal eartips'. Run it per ear.
- Try the next size up. A slightly-too-big foam tip usually beats a slightly-too-small one; it has more material to fill gaps with.
- Keep them clean and dry. Wipe with a dry cloth after workouts; moisture ages foam faster.
Replacing them: what to look for
Any replacement must do two things: seal your ear canal and clear the XM5's charging case. Our memory foam tips for the WF-1000XM5 are shaped for its wide nozzle, come in four sizes plus a mix pack (handy when your ears disagree with Sony's size chart), and each set arrives sealed for hygiene:

Fitting foam correctly matters more than with silicone:
How long should tips last?
Rule of thumb for any foam tip, Sony's included: about six months of daily use, longer if you rotate pairs or use them a few days a week. When bass and isolation fade, swap them; it's the cheapest audio upgrade you can buy.
Everything that fits your earbuds is on the WF-1000XM5 fit page, and the fit finder covers every other model.
Frequently asked questions
Are the stock Sony WF-1000XM5 tips foam or silicone?
Sony ships polyurethane 'noise isolation' tips, a foam-like material. That's why the XM5 seals so well out of the box, and also why the stock tips wear out the way foam does: with daily use they compress, harden and stop sealing after a number of months.
My XM5 sound got thin and the ANC got worse. Are the earbuds broken?
Usually not. When foam-type tips age they stop expanding fully, the seal opens and you lose exactly two things: bass and noise isolation. New tips restore both. Try that before sending anything in for repair.
Sony only includes SS to L sizes. What if none fit?
You're not alone; ear canal sizes vary far more than four steps. Run through the sizes methodically (per ear), and if the best one still leaks or aches, a memory foam tip in the nearest size adapts to the difference instead of forcing your ear to adapt.
Why don't manufacturers include foam eartips in the box?
Because silicone lasts practically forever. A silicone tip can be used for 5 to 10 years, so manufacturers can bundle it once and forget about it. Memory foam adapts to your ear but wears out: with daily use a set typically needs replacing after about six months, when the foam stops sealing properly. That's why foam tips are an upgrade you choose, not a default in the box.
